The Renowned Filmmaker on His War of Independence Film Series: ‘This Is Our Most Crucial Work’

The veteran filmmaker has become beyond being a historical storyteller; his name is a franchise, a prolific creative force. With each new documentary series arriving on the PBS network, everyone seeks an interview.

Burns has done “countless podcast appearances”, he remarks, nearing the end of nine-month promotional tour comprising numerous locations, dozens of preview events and innumerable conversations. “There seems to be a podcast for every citizen, and I believe I’ve appeared on most of them.”

Thankfully Burns possesses boundless energy, equally articulate in interviews as he is accomplished while filmmaking. The 72-year-old has appeared at locations ranging from Monticello to popular podcasts to promote a career-defining series: his Revolutionary War documentary, a comprehensive multi-part historical examination that consumed ten years of his career and debuted this week on public television.

Timeless Filmmaking Method

Similar to traditional cooking in an age of fast food, The American Revolution proudly conventional, evoking memories of The World at War rather than contemporary streaming docs new media formats.

But for Burns, whose professional life chronicling strands of US history covering diverse cultural topics, the revolutionary period is not just another subject but essential. “As I mentioned to directing partner Sarah Botstein during our discussions, and she shared this view: no future work will carry greater importance,” Burns states from his New York base.

Comprehensive Scholarly Work

Burns and his collaborators along with writer Geoffrey Ward utilized countless written sources plus archival documents. Dozens of historians, spanning age and perspective, offered expert analysis in conjunction with distinguished researchers covering various specialties including slavery, first nations scholarship and the British empire.

Distinctive Filmmaking Approach

The documentary’s methodology will feel familiar to fans of historical documentaries. The unique approach incorporated slow pans and zooms through archival photographs, abundant historical musical selections with performers reading diaries, letters and speeches.

That was the moment Burns established his reputation; years later, now the doyen of documentaries, he can attract any actor he chooses. Participating with Burns during a recent appearance, the Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda observed: “Nobody declines an invitation from Ken Burns.”

All-Star Cast

The extended filming period proved beneficial regarding scheduling. Recordings took place at professional facilities, on location and remotely via Zoom, an approach adopted during the pandemic. The director describes the experience with performer Josh Brolin, who made time while in Georgia to voice his character portraying the founding father before flying off to his next engagement.

Brolin is joined by numerous acclaimed actors, respected performing veterans, Domhnall Gleeson, Amanda Gorman, Jonathan Groff, Tom Hanks, Ethan Hawke, Maya Hawke, accomplished dramatic artists, international acting community, skilled dramatic performers, small and big screen veterans, plus additional notable names.

The filmmaker continues: “Honestly, this could represent the finest ensemble recruited for any project. Their contributions are remarkable. Selection wasn’t based on fame. I became frustrated when someone asked, ‘So why the celebrities?’. I responded, ‘These are performers.’ They are among the world’s best performers and they animate historical material.”

Multifaceted Story

However, the absence of living witnesses, visual documentation required the filmmakers to depend substantially on the written word, weaving together individual perspectives of nearly 200 individual historic figures. This approach enabled to show spectators beyond the prominent leaders of the revolution plus numerous additional essential to the narrative, many of whom lack visual representation.

The filmmaker also explored his individual interest for geography and cartography. “I have great affection for cartography,” he comments, “and there are more maps in this film than in all the other films across my complete filmography.”

International Impact

Filmmakers captured footage at numerous significant sites across North America and in London to capture the landscape’s character and worked extensively with living history participants. All these elements combine to present a narrative more bloody, multifaceted and world-changing than the one taught in schools.

The revolution, it contends, transcended provincial conflict about property, revenue and governance. Instead the film portrays a blood-soaked struggle that finally engaged numerous countries and unexpectedly manifested termed “humanity’s highest ideals”.

Brother Against Brother

Early dissatisfaction and objections directed toward Britain by colonial residents throughout multiple disputatious regions soon descended into a brutal civil conflict, dividing communities and households and creating local enmities. During the second installment, academic Alan Taylor comments: “The primary misunderstanding concerning independence struggle is that it was something a consolidating event for colonists. This omits the fact that colonists battled fellow colonists.”

Historical Complexity

For him, the independence account that “for most of us is overwhelmed by emotionalism and wistful remembrance and remains shallow and insufficiently honors the historical reality, every individual involved and the incredible violence of it.

Taylor maintains, a revolution that proclaimed the world-changing idea of fundamental personal liberties; a vicious internal conflict, separating rebels and supporters; plus an international conflict, the fourth in a series of conflicts between Britain, France and Spain for the “prize of North America”.
