A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.
The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this accident,” affirmed the national leader.
The president announced that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office finished the year before. This rail line was intimately linked to his government's economic vision for the southern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The building of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in national works. They were built at an rapid rate, beating expectations to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised persistent concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an immediate pause in the development and management of all similar projects.
This halt was proposed while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party declared that the situation "demands prompt explanations."
In reaction, the head of state insisted that the train had been running in complete compliance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and operation of these vital initiatives.
