New York Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Shooting

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the athlete will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during their latest talk.

“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are doing well and he will walk away from this just fine.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd could be discharged the medical facility, where he is reported as serious yet stable.

“Not certain at the moment,” Glenn remarked. “Yet I must mention, from our conversation, his attitude was encouraging. Furthermore, that’s what gives me comfort, that he feels like that and his words reflect that optimism.”

Authorities released surveillance images Monday of a suspect in the attack on the player. A motive for the shooting is currently under review and police mentioned it’s not clear if Boyd was singled out. No one else was hurt as confirmed by officials.

The incident occurred just after 2am on Sunday morning in the area between MSG and Times Square. Boyd, 29, was taken to a medical center after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, police said. The perpetrator got away.

Glenn said Boyd has been on his mind “a great deal” since the news broke. He further stated that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a child.

“What immediately crossed my mind, he just had a kid,” Glenn noted. “My mind went to his family, I’m thinking about his kid and my priority is his well-being. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There is a procedure involved, that I won’t detail, but It is reassuring that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”

Boyd was inactive during the current season, after joining the team, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on mid-August with a shoulder injury that needed an operation.

He signed with New York as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was projected as an important component of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a training camp practice on August 2 and had to be helped off.

Boyd continued to be present all season long while recovering from the shoulder injury.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn stated. “In fact, he comes to the games all the time. His commitment is total. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, a Texas native, began his career with Minnesota after getting drafted in the seventh round by the Vikings out of Texas University in the 2019 draft. He joined Arizona in last year and then joined Houston’s practice squad subsequently. Boyd signed a one-year contract worth $1.6m with New York in the spring.
