A former Royal Marines Commando acted as a “man in a rage” as he drove into scores of LFC supporters during a victory parade, in what many feared was a act of terrorism, according to court proceedings. “The footage was profoundly upsetting.” Those injured of Paul Doyle cried while dashcam footage depicted bodies spinning through the air while he sped towards the gathering and shouted: “Get out of the way!” Doyle, 54, will learn his fate on Tuesday following his guilty plea at the start of his trial last month to 31 criminal charges against 21 adults and eight children. ‘Consumed by Anger’ The prosecution warned the court that the footage from the defendant’s large people carrier was “extremely graphic”. The recording revealed the parent yelling “fucking pricks” and “fucking move” as he drove towards a large crowd of supporters, with people frantically dragging children to safety as he blasted the horn. The court was told that Doyle acted as a “man in a rage had completely overpowered him” as he ploughed further into the crowd, accelerating as people collided with his car. Scale of the Carnage Overall, the ex-marine hurt 134 people in just seven minutes – including more than 50 requiring hospital care. A six-month-old boy was “miraculously” uninjured even though he was left on the roadway when Doyle’s car hit his pram, the court heard. A supporter, a man named in court, was shown being thrown into the air by the car, sustaining a laceration on his head, rib fractures and multiple abrasions. The defendant was heard screaming “for God’s sake move! Get out my fucking way!” prior to driving deeper into panicked fans, among them an older woman and young children who became trapped beneath the vehicle. Scene of Jubilation Turns to Horror Addressing a packed courtroom, lawyers said about 1 million people were present at “what they thought would be a day of joyfulness” marking Liverpool winning their 20th league title. Scenes of jubilation turned to “horror”, the prosecutor said, as Doyle drove into oncoming fans as he attempted to pick up a friend from the parade route. “Witnesses believed the events unfolding was a terrorist attack.” Brave Intervention Stops Driver With injured people on the street, Doyle’s rampage was brought to a halt by a former soldier, a man identified in court, who climbed into a rear passenger seat and held the car’s gear selector in “park”. Even then, Doyle kept his foot on the accelerator, according to evidence. In his police interview, Doyle claimed he acted in a “state of sheer panic” due to a fear for his safety. However, prosecutors contended that the dashcam footage demonstrated Doyle “simply lost control in his determination to reach his destination”. The prosecutor added: “In a rage, he targeted the crowd and in doing so he intended to cause them serious harm.” Dangerous Driving Prior to Incident The video showed the driver was driving recklessly prior to entering downtown, undertaking cars at speed and jumping red lights. He ignored road closures and bypassed other vehicles, including an ambulance and police cars, as he entered the crowds. Doyle is understood to be facing a jail term of more than 10 years when he is sentenced on Tuesday.
