New research indicates that patients who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a prominent health publication shows that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"People purchasing these drugs must be informed of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a return to starting mass within about 18 months.
Weighing Treatments
The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with other pills.
Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically have a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Understanding the Rapid Rebound
Doctors suggest the way of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified rebound.
These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."
A Chronic Condition?
Health authorities suggest the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.
This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Accounts
People who have come off the medication describe a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced something flipping and you're instantly ravenous," said an individual.
This difficulty is compounded if users have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Growing Use
Survey data show that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is more common among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
In conclusion, experts stress that while these medications are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined behavioural support.
