A Significant Milestone as Rosenior Overcomes Barriers

"He is an excellent manager who understands football back to front, and that's what matters most.

"But, as Chelsea's first black player, I would be lying if I said this news doesn't move me."

Those are the words expressed by Paul Canoville, who earned his groundbreaking first appearance for Chelsea's senior side off the bench in April 1982.

This week, the club appointed RC Strasbourg manager Liam Rosenior, aged 41, as their new head coach following the exit of Enzo Maresca.

Strasbourg are within the Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital-owned ownership group which also owns Chelsea.

There have been just twelve black head coaches – excluding individuals in temporary caretaker roles – in the Premier League since its inception thirty-four in the past.

"One thing that impresses me regarding Rosenior is that he was raised and played locally, he knows the local fans," continued Canoville.

"When children see someone like Liam in charge of the team they support, a person who looks like them, from a similar background, who comes from a household that champions equality… that's impactful demonstrating that opportunities exist.

"Indeed, this represents a massive step for Chelsea, for London, for every aspiring individual dreaming big.

"However, currently? Let's back Liam, provide him with what he needs, and let the man do his work."

What Do the Data Reveal?

The iconic Dutchman Ruud Gullit became Chelsea manager in 1996 thereby becoming the Premier League's inaugural black manager.

Twelve years later, in 2008, Paul Ince was appointed as the first black English manager in the top flight after taking charge at Blackburn Rovers.

The Hammers' manager Nuno Espirito Santo currently stands as the sole additional current top flight boss of colour.

The shortage of ethnic minority managers across the English game corresponds with a lack of representation at executive level.

As per the Black Footballers Partnership 2023's report, 43% of Premier League players come from black backgrounds.

Yet, analysis from Kick It Out found just 3.2 percent of board and senior leadership positions at most Premier League clubs are held by people from minority ethnic communities.

At senior coaching level, according to data from eleven clubs, the figure stands at two percent.

Across all coaching roles – including senior roles – from those same 11 clubs, the figure is just five percent.

"He's certainly made history by virtue of his appointment as a the Chelsea manager, and we want to witness more such appointments," said the chief executive of Kick It Out Samuel Okafor.

"We know there is loads of ability present within ethnic minority groups... aspiring coaches want the opportunity to show what they can do. We need to continue to striving to dismantle those barriers down."

Additionally, Rosenior is set to become the fourth permanent English head coaches currently managing in the top flight – alongside Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe as well as Scott Parker – a number that lags behind the continent's other big five divisions regarding homegrown managers.

16 of the 20 top-flight managers in Serie A are Italian, Eleven of the 20 are Spanish, Twelve in the Bundesliga in Germany while 10 of the 18 are French.

The present Chelsea caretaker manager Calum McFarlane commented: "I'm sure every aspiring British coaches from an academy background are, in some way regardless of allegiance, rooting for Liam.

"It's truly motivating for up-and-coming British coaches in the system to see someone get such a role with his background and everyone hopes he does really well."

His father, Leroy, Rosenior Sr., had a career with clubs such as West London clubs, the Hammers and Queens Park Rangers, with his coaching stint peaked with a five-month spell at the third-tier club Brentford FC in 2006.

Two years ago, he was awarded a Member of the Order of the British Empire in the 2019 New Year Honours for his services in combating inequality in football and beyond.

When Rosenior Jr hung up his boots he pursued a path in management. He began penning articles for The Guardian, where in 2017 he addressed the under-representation of black coaches. He pointed out that ethnicity does not determine coaching skill arguing that roles must be awarded based on qualification.

He also made a point he would repeat: how vast lack of diversity leads to misunderstandings of players from different ethnic and cultural heritage.

During an interview with The Athletic FC, he explained how his star striker, Emmanuel Emegha, had been described as "difficult" or "emotional", but said he could relate to the Netherlands player of Nigerian descent. The striker is expected to join him in moving from Strasbourg to West London in July.

In subsequent newspaper articles, Rosenior also admitted he was "embarrassed" to hear an unnamed staff member utter a discriminatory remark. He pledged his support for the Rainbow Laces initiative and authored a public message to the former US President during his first US presidency, accusing him of "overt" racism.

He has subsequently built his reputation in the dugout – initially with Hull City, later at Strasbourg – with Wayne Rooney said this week Rosenior was "as good a coach as I've ever worked with" following their collaboration at Derby County.

The manager bid his farewells at Strasbourg on Tuesday morning prior to putting pen to paper on a six‑and‑a‑half‑year contract at Chelsea.

The Blues boasted the top flight's pioneering black boss with Gullit and the first black skipper in Paul Elliott.
