It might not have been at the identical stature as granting clemency to holiday birds, but the county's top official had her own ceremonial pardon event this week by formally pardoning the life of a swine named Six Seven. Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood. “This animal is guiltless. She deserves this act of mercy. No offenses are on her docket,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with clear references to the extraordinary and sizable number of pardons issued since the beginning of a new presidential term. “If we disregard eating six or seven apples per day,” the mayor added. “May this pig enjoy a lengthy and joyful existence free from concern.” The event, which both honors and questions the area's customary feast of consuming swine during the holidays, was founded to replicate the traditional fowl clemency at the White House. The swine, contributed by a Coral Gables firefighter, was named for the popular vernacular phrase of young people shouting “six-seven” – inspired by a rap song lyric – often for no discernable reason. The phrase became so ubiquitous that a major dictionary recently declared “six-seven” its annual vocabulary selection. A New Life The pardoned swine is now destined to live out its days at a countryside refuge “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the event’s official press release. “The annual pig pardon has become one of our favorite ways to kick off the end-of-year celebrations,” said Eric Castellanos, in a particularly upbeat message. “It represents the essence of Miami: vibrant, diverse, and based in heritage that bring people together. Annually, we are honored to observe heritage and mercy in a way unique to Miami.” Guests enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach fritters and Cuban coffee as they celebrated the swine's new lease on life.
