A Limited-Edition Pokémon Card Seeks to Curb the Influence Against Speculators

To celebrate the arrival of the fascinating new book Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology, an exciting collaboration is underway. The Pokémon Company alongside London's Natural History Museum are opening a temporary store stocked with special items. Enthusiasts can look forward to products like stationery, plushes, and artwork all drawing from the institution's theme. The big draw, however, is a specially made Pikachu card, offered as a free bonus for the pop-up. This shop is scheduled from on-site at the museum to online from January 26 to April 19.

Pokécology Behind the Collaboration

Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology is a highly anticipated volume packed with beautiful artwork that show Pokémon in their natural habitats. The concept like the kind of research an in-world scientist might publish after trainers provide field notes, or what Charles Darwin might have created if the famous islands were populated by flying-types instead of finches. Part of the charm lies in the book's serious treatment, presenting Pokémon as worthy of scientific inquiry. Author Yoshinari Yonehara together with artist Chihiro Kinoshita each possess PhDs in animal behavior and ecology.

Why This Promo Card Stand Out

It is common to issue special edition cards celebrating major tournaments and brand collaborations. Many such promotional cards typically highlight the iconic electric rodent who serves as the series face. The factor setting this latest promotion apart however, is the distinctly bigger dimensions. While precise specs were not publicly disclosed, availability will certainly be highly restricted, with customers limited to only a single card per purchase.

Limiting Speculator Activity

According to a company statement, some of the merchandise will also be sold outside the museum walls. But, a wider release will only be select retailers in the United Kingdom. Importantly, fans cannot purchase this promo through the official web shop. Although reseller interest is inevitable, the setup suggests they will have trouble hoarding mass quantities this time around. For those unable to attend, there is the upcoming Pokémon Fossil exhibit headed to the Windy City later this year.

"Every penny from purchases made in the museum store and from its online store, including these items, support the Natural History Museum’s non-profit work. That encompasses the efforts of 400 scientists who are scientific inquiry to discover answers to the global ecological crisis," the statement notes.
